Weddings

Dreaming about your wedding day? The Sunshine Coast’s proximity to Vancouver and Vancouver Island makes it easily accessible for you and your guests. Experienced local vendors can handle all of your needs, from event planning, catering, and lodging to flowers and photos.

Looking for ideas? If you’re planning a big party for all your friends and family, consider one of the region’s luxurious full-service resorts or a budget-friendly community hall or historic building for a touch of charm. If an intimate celebration is more your style, consider eloping via a floatplane charter to say “I do” in front of a rushing waterfall surrounded by west-coast rainforest, or at the top of a mountain surrounded by fresh snow. You can also gather your loved ones on the beach for an oceanside ceremony or book a waterfront B&B for an upscale “backyard” wedding. The opportunities are endless on the Sunshine Coast.

Permits & Celebrants

Wondering if a permit is required to get married on a local beach or park? Or perhaps you're looking for a local Marriage Commissioner.

Licensing & Permits

  • To get married in British Columbia, you'll need to obtain a Marriage License at some time in the three months prior to your wedding date.

  • While permits are not always required, you should check with the property owner ahead of time to make sure your celebration doesn't require a permit and meets local laws. Public spaces, such as beaches and parks, typically require permission and/or an official permit. On the Sunshine Coast there are provincial, regional, and municipal public spaces that are managed separately. Check with the appropriate authority to see if they require a permit. Most local governments require a Special Event permit to host a private event/wedding/ceremony within local parks, beaches, and other public spaces.

Celebrants

Need a celebrant? Consult BC's list of local Marriage Commissioners. Keep in mind that when searching this list, you must enter a search area (city name) to find a local commissioner.  Enter local community names nearest to your ceremony location to search, such as Gibsons, Sechelt, or Powell River.
